Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää in Helsinki, Finland in 2004. Wintersun est un groupe de speed melodic death metal, projet solo de Jari Mäenpää, ancien chanteur du groupe Ensiferum.  Le groupe est fondé par Jari Mäenpää après qu'il ait quitté le groupe Ensiferum en 2004. Le premier album éponyme fut lancé le 13 septembre 2004.  Il faut souligner que Jari Mäenpää a conçu ce premier album seul et qu'il a interprété tous les instruments sauf la batterie qui a été interprétée par Kai Hahto.
