Gotye is Aussie Belgian Wally De Backer. He plays drums, percussion and piano, and he writes, sings and produces tracks at his home, currently in Victoria, Australia. Gotye's sound is a melting pot of samples from sources far and wide, mixed with Wally's vocals and home recorded sounds to form original songs that are as likely to channel '80s New Romantic pop or '60s Motown soul as they are to be experiments in kooky turntablism or progressive trip-hop landscapes.

Gotye is many things to many people, and, at once, many things to just one person (himself for instance), although, at times, he may be a few things to a few people. At once.  Sometimes, he may mean something to some person or people (and we all know you can fool some people, some of the time) but it must be said: his aim is to fool himself, all of the time. Which he does.  Sometimes  .

Eyes Wide Open is the first single from Gotye's third album, released in early 2011. The Eyes Wide Open Songfacts explains the bassline that underpins this ecologically themed song is made up of samples of Gotye playing The Winton Musical Fence, which is a musical instrument installation consisting of five huge metal strings attached to fence posts, and connected to a wooden resonant chamber. The fence is located in Winton, Queensland and Gotye took the opportunity to record sounds from the unusual instrument on his portable stereo recorder.
